About the Book
Wiley's Physical Chemistry for JEE (Main and Advanced) by Vipul Mehta takes a subject that terrifies most aspirants and turns it into something approachable. Adapted from the widely respected Wiley physical chemistry series, this edition has been restructured specifically for Indian competitive exams. The result is a textbook that reads like it was built from the ground up for JEE, not retrofitted after the fact.
Vipul Mehta brings a coaching-grounded perspective to the material. Rather than reproducing university-style derivations and leaving students to figure out exam application on their own, he writes with the question paper always in mind. Every concept introduction leads toward problem-solving, and every derivation is followed by a worked example that shows how the formula behaves when the numbers change.
What Makes It Different
Fourteen chapters span over a thousand pages of content. The book opens with two full chapters on mole concept — one covering stoichiometry and basic calculations, the other tackling redox reactions, equivalent mass, and volumetric analysis. That is nearly 120 pages on foundational quantitative chemistry alone, which tells you how seriously Mehta treats the basics. Students who skip these chapters thinking they already know mole concept usually pay for it later in numerical-heavy questions.
Gaseous and liquid states receive 80 pages, walking through gas laws, kinetic theory, van der Waals equation, and real gas behaviour with the kind of clarity that makes derivations feel less like memorisation and more like logical consequences. Solid state gets its own thorough treatment — crystal lattices, Bravais lattices, packing efficiency, defects, and X-ray diffraction are all covered with diagrams that actually help rather than decorate.
The atomic structure chapter runs from Thomson's experiments through Bohr's model to the full quantum mechanical treatment, including radial distribution curves and orbital shapes. Chemical bonding follows with equal depth, covering VSEPR theory, hybridization, molecular orbital theory, and hydrogen bonding — each section building on the last so that by the time you reach MOT, the logic feels earned rather than imposed.
Where the book truly shines is its treatment of energetics and equilibrium. Chemical energetics alone takes 95 pages, covering everything from basic thermodynamic terminology through Carnot cycles, entropy, and Gibbs energy. The equilibrium chapters — both chemical and ionic — handle Le Chatelier's principle, buffer solutions, and solubility product with a precision that mirrors the multi-step numerical problems JEE Advanced loves to throw at students.
Electrochemistry and chemical kinetics round out the applied chapters, followed by surface chemistry and nuclear chemistry. Each chapter ends with solved previous year questions, review problems, numerical exercises, and additional objective questions. Two full mock papers — one for JEE Main and one for Advanced — sit at the end of the book, along with appendices for quick revision.
The book does demand commitment. Skimming will not work here. Mehta expects you to work through the examples with a pen in hand, and the reward for that effort shows up directly in your mock scores. That is not a flaw; it is the point.
